What Makes A Picture Popular On Flickr

Through The Coffee Cup

Playing with my Fuji X20 in Starbucks coffee shop

It still amazes me that some images are way more popular than others, despite sometimes having very little thought put into the concept. While other images clearly have taken much more effort, yet much less views or likes. Take for example the image above. I shot this the very first day I got my Fuji X20. While unboxing it in the local Starbucks I began playing around with it and happened to capture this shot of fellow customer pondering the meaning of life.

Yesterday - #FlickrFriday No.24

Starbucks, yesterday and today through the Fuji X20

Here is another image that I enjoyed taking, again in Starbucks to capture the retro style of the shop and again see what my new Fuji X20 could do. Again this was very well received on Flickr and even was ‘Explored’. I can not explain the popularity, although I do like it myself. However, many other images that I might have expected to get more attention did not make much of an impact on the Flickr community.

Just the two of us

Take for example the picture above of two lovely teddy bears out on a date. One might have expected there to be some activity in number of views or comments. Yet not so much.

Another image that I thought was quite interesting or at the very least thought provoking was this image I shot of a take on the movie Forrest Gump. Again there was interest, but nothing like the two images above. Then again there have been images that surpassed my understanding of why they are my most popular images of all time.

London Calling is my second most popular image on Flickr.

I would love to hear what other Flickr users think. What type of images do you usually find are grab attention or cause people to comment? Do you find that it is not the image concept that is interesting but when you upload the picture or have you found certain themes are big hits (like sunsets)?

Anyway, feel free to check out the images on Flickr by clicking on the images and if you are part of the Flickr community do connect. I love to see what others are doing and get inspired by their work.

Scott Kelby Worldwide Photo Walk – Titanic Belfast

DSC_0093

On Saturday the 5th October I had the opportunity to be apart of the 6th Annual Scott Kelby Worldwide Photo Walk. I noticed that there was two walks in Belfast, but the Titanic Belfast interested me the most. I really love this signature building with its modern architecture and cool exhibition to the lost White Line ship.

I have to say I met the greatest bunch of photographers, who made me feel very welcome, considering they were all professionals and part of the same club. The walk allowed me to shoot a set full of architecture, people, history, among other things. However, the above image is the one I submitted to the walk website, but feel free to check out the full set.

I certainly will be looking to take part again next year. Perhaps then I might even have learn’t a few new skills.

Strangers We Meet

I met this gentleman while trying to take these landscape pictures and one of the moon. He approached me loudly from a distance, suggesting I take his picture, because I would never get a picture of an Irishman like him. I believe that might be true after our conversation and anyway, how could I refuse such an interesting character with a stick!

So I swung the camera around on the tripod and quickly fulfilled his request. As you can see there was no time for composition or even to consider focus. Just capture the moment, hope everyone is happy and get back to capturing my shoreline before the light was gone

However, the whole evening was full of people asking what I was looking at, what was it i saw and was I a professional. It seems a camera on a tripod convinces everyone you are a professional even when all you hoped for was a quiet night to better know learn your craft. Still it meant I got to take this gem of a photo. Feel free to let me know what do you think or share you stories of strangers you’ve met while out taking pictures.

Explored While Exploring The X20

So finally made a decision about which camera to get as a travel buddy. After selling my first image to a publishing house I bought myself a Fuji X20 enthusiast compact camera for travelling. I chose to get the retro silver version and got a great deal from Calumet Photography in Belfast. As you can imagine I couldn’t wait to go home to unbox this new toy, so instead popped into the Starbucks on Elmwood Avenue.

While there I submitted the above image taken with the X20 for the #FlickrFriday theme ‘Yesterday’ featuring a black and white print of an original Starbucks shop on the wall of the newly furnished Elmwood store. To my surprise this morning it was Explored.

Great day at The MAC taking in the photography exhibition of Northern Ireland in a variety of images. Well worth a visit if you are in Belfast.

Afternoon Tea For Two

An excellent way for me to develop my photography has been through participating in #FlickrFriday weekly themed challenge. Resulting in me trying out new things or finding better ways to express these themes when I’m out and about. This Saturday I visited coastal old town Whitehead and while taking photos, I looked for a way to help this couple become my theme submission.

Spring Time Arrives

Yesterday the sun came out and the world looked different. Proof that spring has arrived was all around me so I captured a few snaps. Click the image above to view the rest in my photostream.
