Atticus Turns 3 Months

Since our son was born it’s been my passion to capture each change on camera. To do this I decided to photography a monthly image using stickers my sister sent me from the states.

But yesterday it was a double bonus when his three month picture got explored on Flickr. Check out the picture on Flickr

Going With GoPro

Having seen and read a lot about the GoPro Hero cameras I took the plunge and bought myself a Black Edition. Of course this is an action camera, something mostly used for sport and selfies. However my main use is to capture the actions of our newborn. His first swim, first walk, first interactions with his environment and so on.

Yet, it’s early days for the little fella. He has just turned three months so we could not go to the pool until he had all his injections. So in the meantime I’m using the opportunity to learn how this little box works best. So first up I stuck it to the car window and captured some wide angle stills.

My GoPro Images

Obviously not the most exciting use of this excellent camera, still a lot to learn to get the most out of it. However, I have now discovered the various mounts, brackets and even quadcopters available. So this is only the beginning of my new relationship with GoPro. Come back and see how Atticus and I are getting on in future posts.

Embracing the model character for photography

American Hustle

American Hustle

If you are anything like me and have only began to get to grips with photography, you might well have discovered that without willing participants you end up having to be your own model. This has been the case for me more than once this year, as I tried to complete a different theme each week for my Project 52.

It is interesting trying to be both the photographer and the subject at the same time. The above image was taken as part of a #FlickrFriday theme called #shakenbutnotstirred. This particular image ended up more like the film American Hustle and I quite liked it. However the image I submitted in the end was the image is below, as it looked more like a James Bond villain.

With reluctance I have appeared a few more times in my Flickr photos and here is some examples. However I would have preferred to have had some volunteers to be my subjects for this type of photography.

What Makes A Picture Popular On Flickr

Through The Coffee Cup

Playing with my Fuji X20 in Starbucks coffee shop

It still amazes me that some images are way more popular than others, despite sometimes having very little thought put into the concept. While other images clearly have taken much more effort, yet much less views or likes. Take for example the image above. I shot this the very first day I got my Fuji X20. While unboxing it in the local Starbucks I began playing around with it and happened to capture this shot of fellow customer pondering the meaning of life.

Yesterday - #FlickrFriday No.24

Starbucks, yesterday and today through the Fuji X20

Here is another image that I enjoyed taking, again in Starbucks to capture the retro style of the shop and again see what my new Fuji X20 could do. Again this was very well received on Flickr and even was ‘Explored’. I can not explain the popularity, although I do like it myself. However, many other images that I might have expected to get more attention did not make much of an impact on the Flickr community.

Just the two of us

Take for example the picture above of two lovely teddy bears out on a date. One might have expected there to be some activity in number of views or comments. Yet not so much.

Another image that I thought was quite interesting or at the very least thought provoking was this image I shot of a take on the movie Forrest Gump. Again there was interest, but nothing like the two images above. Then again there have been images that surpassed my understanding of why they are my most popular images of all time.

I would love to hear what other Flickr users think. What type of images do you usually find are grab attention or cause people to comment? Do you find that it is not the image concept that is interesting but when you upload the picture or have you found certain themes are big hits (like sunsets)?

Anyway, feel free to check out the images on Flickr by clicking on the images and if you are part of the Flickr community do connect. I love to see what others are doing and get inspired by their work.

Explored Again

Baby's View

Finally after some time I have been featured again on Flickr Explored. I was starting to think I may never get selected again. Not sure how Flickr actually makes the selection process but it is always nice to have your image reach a wider audience. After all what is the point of taking photos if no one gets to see what you saw. The image is all about perspective. In this case the view that a baby sees from a pram.

Feel free to leave a comment or connect on Flickr if you have an account.

Adventures With A 85mm Macro Lens

My latest addition to the range of lens for my Nikon D5200 is an Nikon 85mm macro lens. I obtained this beauty from eBay and I am delighted with it. I have always wanted to experiment with close up images, especially toys and objects.

I have added a few images to my Flickr account which have been a lot if fun to set up and shoot.

White Space Explored

I often post about #FlickrFriday a weekly theme competition on Flickr. Mainly because I enjoy the challenge and also because it forces me to try new things. If you haven’t taken part before, I would highly recommend giving it a go. A great way to see how others interpret themes and allow others to experience your work.

Last Friday’s theme was entitled #WhiteSpace and for me the White Album by the Beatles would be prefect to work with for my submission. With time scarce I used the disc and sleeve to make up the image and submitted it. However I have to say it was a real surprise to discover that it was immediately Explored on 23rd of September, the next day and to date has been viewed over 18,000 times.

It is an honour to be Explored on Flickr and this is the sixth time, but never has one of my images been so popular. I’m sure others have been Explored many times, but I am chuffed to be featured in this way. Perhaps it is because it is about the ‘fab four’ or that it fitted the theme so well, but for whatever reason that day my mobile just kept beeping as comments were posted. So I wanted to say thank you to everyone who viewed the image, and especially those who left me encouraging comments.

I would love to hear about what others know about Flickr Explore and how images are chosen. So please do feel encourage to leave comments in any of my posts on this blog.
